CHAPTER EIGHT

2:00 P.M.

The Sage Supreme had her engines dead 300 meters from the bank of the río Guadalquivir.

Kobe Arthur stood on on the deck of his plush Supreme and gazed out at the Spanish skyline. His employees and competitors called him the deadly marlin behind his back. And he knew of it. But right now, he didn’t feel deadly. He felt dejected more than he had before. He couldn’t get his own daughter to come be with her before her time of death would arrive.

This was a nightmare come true.

For decades, Kobe had managed to outguess, outbid, and out advertise all the competition that’d come his way; and right now, he intended on proving he was actually a giant in the world he was legend in. He was going to do whatever it took to protect Sage.

Before coming up deck to breathe in the damn afternoon air, he’d given strict orders that were being followed without delay by his tech team. It was in times like this that he missed home. His basement division. He loves just how James, the head of the team performed his duties. I should have taken him with me when I left, he thought.

A man came up deck to him, a bead of sweat dripping on his desk. Kobe swiftly turned.

“Were you able to trace the call?” he asked. Even in moments like these, Kobe was clear-headed.

“Affirmative, sir. Mauritius.”

“Mauritius?!” Kobe gaped. What the fuck are you doing in Mauritius?! Madagascar my foot!

“We’ve also been able to track Mr. Danlami and –”

“I’ll deal with Mateo later. Give me the juice on Andre Goldberg. Did you find him?”

“He’s two minutes out.”

“Fantastic. Call Sonya Vegares. Tell her I need a favor. She should ready the jet…someone’s flying to Mauritius.”

His blood was alive with the cool rush of adrenaline. Kobe knew it was time for business. Business was war. War was exciting.

***

Andre Goldberg was a hard man to find. An ex-con who knew nothing better to do with his life than offer his services to the highest bidder. What hadn’t he done? He’d been a bounty hunter and had apprehended thirteen of some of the high profile criminals in America and United Africa. Over a duration of nine months. When Kobe heard of it, he’d looked at it as though it were a pregnancy – a delivery due. Because that was when he got a more revered name in the organized crime world and was turned with the most amount of money he’d ever been paid.

Andre had had many names. At some point, he’d been master forger of antiquities. Nine years ago he was paid a pile of money for a cuneiform tablet by the boss of the Accrodinov crime family. Andre was supposed to find this tablet which he discovered was part of the Gramway library. What he didn’t know was what that Mr. Accrodinov rather upset to learn was that two weeks earlier, looters had broken into Mali’s museum of antiquities and destroyed the entire collection. So he was being set up to fail.
